Jiayi Chen gave Shanghai Taste a five-star review and recommended two dishes: Xiao Long Bao and Sheng Jian Bao. Both have pork and hot broth inside. One is steamed; the other is pan-fried.
"best chinese food in rockville, xiao long bao, sheng jian bao, must try."
— Jiayi Chen, five-star customer review
Start with Xiao Long Bao (小笼包)
Our Pork Soup Dumpling is Xiao Long Bao: a thin, pleated wrapper filled with seasoned pork and broth, then steamed. Lift one gently into a spoon, make a small opening, and let the broth cool before sipping. Our Xiao Long Bao guide explains how they're made.
Then Try Sheng Jian Bao (生煎包) on a Weekend
Sheng Jian Bao, listed as Pan Fry Soup Dumpling, has thicker dough with a crisp, golden bottom and soft top. It also contains pork and hot broth.
Our Sheng Jian Bao are available on weekends only. If you want to follow Jiayi's recommendation and try both dishes on one visit, plan for Saturday or Sunday and check the current menu for availability.
How to Enjoy the Pair
Try the steamed dumplings while their wrappers are tender, then the pan-fried buns while their bottoms are crisp. Both hold very hot broth. Open each over a spoon and wait until the broth cools before tasting. Black vinegar is optional.
See our visit guide for the weekend schedule.
